Like Verizon and T-Mobile, AT&T has big plans for the 5G future, and also like the former, it's roll-out in the next couple weeks will almost no affect on the average consumer right away.
In a conference call, AT&T detailed their plans for the 5G roll-out beginning with cities like Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, and Oklahoma City before expanding to the West Coast by 2019. The technology behind 5G touts drastic increases in speed and reliability for cellular carriers as the successor to 4G.
However, there are currently little to no devices that support the new standard making the initial roll-out of little use to the average consumer. More commonly, mobile hotspots and other data devices will be the first to gain value from the new standard until newer phones are released with support such as the iPhone XI, Galaxy X, and Pixel 4.
Even with new devices, many consumers will not see immediate results as only densely populated metropolitan areas are slated for coverage in the near future. Nonetheless, newer, faster, and stronger cellular data is coming, and that is something we can all look forward to in the future.
