We have all heard of "throwing money away"; it commonly means frivolously spending money on things that are either unnecessary or unlikely to offer any return on investment. I am certain that we have all done this from time to time, but it certainly, in my experience, has been on small impulse buys that are quickly forgotten. But, thanks to Caviar, we can all truly throw money away on something that is outrageously priced, totally unnecessary, and guaranteed to offer little return on investment.

Originally noticed on The Verge, the iPhone XS MAX " Swiss Dreams Watchphone" is a textbook example of wasted money. For just $21,730, you can buy maxed out iPhone XS MAX with a 4th Generation Apple Watch strapped to the back. The watch comes gold-plated with a gold band that appears to be attached to the back of a goldish-cased iPhone. While the sound of that may make Goldmember blush, for any practical reasons, it is just a sign of stupidity.

Firstly, as pointed out by reporter Chaim Gartenberg, the Apple Watch charges by placing the puck on the back of the body; as shown by the picture, the back is completely inaccessible. Hopefully, Caviar sends the watch fully charged as it appears you only get a one-time use. Additionally, the Apple Watch (despite the LTE version) is still very much a companion to the iPhone. Why would you look at this watch for notification and apps when a full-featured phone is on the other side? The only advantage the Apple Watch maintains over the iPhone is the abundance of fitness trackers which are, again, on the back of the body.

Moving from the watch to the phone, it still remains to be seen who would want a watch on the back of their phone. Not only does this make the iPhone more uncomfortable and awkward to hold, but it places an expensive screen on the side of the phone that is mostly like to be scratched or damaged (take note of this Vivo). Finally, it completely eliminates the ability to lay this on a charging mat for wireless charging that was finally introduced to the iPhone.

Even if you could overlook the complete idiocy of this design, the price alone makes very little sense. A fully-loaded iPhone XS MAX does not even come close to $2,000, and there is certainly not enough gold on it to significantly ramp up the price. Additionally, an Apple Watch falls well below the $1,000 mark; although, apparently Caviar does sell a gold-plated Apple Watch that retails for $3,000. Adding the numbers, at most this device could possibly have a MSRP of $4,500-5,000 making a tremendous mark-up of roughly $15,500.

So, if you are interested, you can buy a phone that is both grossly overpriced and completely impractical, but, hey, maybe it will help you flex a little bit. For the record, they do offer a less expensive option: a 64GB option for just $21,050. For those that are thinking clearly, this is clearly defined as "throwing money away".
