Android messages integration with Chrome OS appears to be live...if you are a part of the developer channel.

Originally announced as "SMS Connect" before transitioning into "Better Together", messages integration (along with Smart Lock and Instant Tethering) was designed to better tie the Google software ecosystem together. Much like iMessage and Skype Messages, messages on Chrome OS would allow you to text message from your Chromebook thus achieving the goal of being able to use one device at a time.

According to Chrome Unboxed, the feature has been demoed on a Pixel Slate to be working correctly. In addition, it appears that the feature has been found on not only Pixelbooks, but also a Samsung Chromebook Plus. It is worth noting that this feature may not work on all devices right now so rushing off to the developer channel may not be the greatest idea just yet.

For now, it is best to stick with the "Your Phone" app if you have a Windows PC or the web interface if you already have a Chromebook. It is nice to see that this feature has not been abandoned; it should go live in the near future.
