The power of the Google Assistant is coming to Chromebooks...every Chromebook.

Chrome OS Assistant

Last year, Google showcased the Google Assistant running on the Pixelbook, and it has remained exclusive to the Pixelbook ever since. With the introduction of the Pixel Slate, Google upped the amount of devices to two, but rumors arose that additional Chromebooks would begin to see the Google Assistant. It now appears that time may soon be coming.

The Pixelbook and Pixel Slate currently run Google Assistant through the Google app and Android support; this allows the Assistant to maintain the same interface on a larger screen as it does a smaller screen. As newer Chromebooks also run Android apps, they could also run Google Assistant. However, older Chromebooks do not run the Android apps making Google's claim of running Google Assistant on all Chromebooks a tall order.

However, according to 9to5Google, Google may have found a different way to bring their category-leading assistant to all Chromebooks. Using a combination of web and native and web interfaces, Google has managed to get a version of Google Assistant that should, hypothetically, run on any Chromebook. While it has not yet been determined how much runs on native services and how much runs on web services, it does show that Google is serious about getting their marquee feature on every device.

Early screenshots of the service show the settings section of the Assistant are web-based making them accessible from any browser. With the introduction of Assistant, Linux Apps, and Android, it is clear that Google is firmly behind making Chromebooks and ChromeOS a fully featured, personal computing experience.
