Google Fi, the Google backed MVNO network that is soon-to-be formerly known as Project Fi, appears to be supporting a lot more manufacturers, and yes, they are some big industry players.
Fi, a network utilizing both T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular towers, currently supports a very limited set of devices which included all the Pixels, LG V35 ThinQ, LG G7 ThinQ, Moto G6, Android One Moto X4, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6; even more limiting (somewhat), the devices must be the North American models. So, while the low pricing and pay-per-gig plan are certainly enticing for many, the lack of support of major phones makes the "project" impractical for many. However, according to Droid Life, who spotted a since-removed article on BGR, that is about the change.
It appears that Fi is now set to support devices from Samsung and Apple, the top two mobile manufacturers in the United States; for enthusiasts, OnePlus will also be supported. Additionally, current Fi-partnering manufacturers Motorola and LG will add new devices to the list of support. This should open the door to a much larger concentration of people that are ready to break from the big carriers and long-term contracts.
According to the report, the expansion should take effect this week. Currently, it is noted that iPhone support is still in beta phase meaning there could be bugs or missing features that should be ironed out over time. Google is also stating that while a larger swath of phones will be supported, "Fi-friendly" phones, such as those currently sold via Google, will still offer the best overall experience. That could mean features are unavailable on the unofficial devices, or it could just be Google trying to encourage people to purchase a Pixel. We will see after Google makes an official statement.
UPDATE: Google has laid out how Fi will work on iPhones including the restriction of iPhone 5S and up. See the chart below for features missing from iPhone on Google Fi:
