As everyone from Apple to Amazon to Google introduce Dark Modes to save the eyes (and battery), Microsoft appears to be heading in the opposite direction with the new Windows Update. In their next major update, codenamed 19H1, which should be released some time in April, Microsoft will introduce a new light theme.

The new light theme, which features A LOT of white, actually bears a great deal in common with Google's new Material Theme. The mode introduces a lot of white and brightness including in the start menu and settings menus. Changing modes will change both the system UI and apps UI which could be quite glaring to the eyes. In addition, it is likely to be a damper on battery life for any Windows-based LED devices. Thankfully, there is a change coming to the brightness slider which could help alleviate the glaring white.

Because many are pushing towards dark modes, this is likely to be a seldom used mode for the majority of users; however, for those of us that love the bright, sharpness of LED white, this is a very interesting change. Microsoft is going all in on this new mode by adjusting the default wallpaper to better fit the light theme. This will launch in April alongside other features such as an improved snipping tool, printing updates, and intelligent off-time updating.
