Only "Made By Google" Qi-chargers will support 10W rapid charging on the Pixel 3

There appears to be some questioning (and some controversy) around Google's new Pixel Stand; specifically, it looks like there is a dilemma regarding the Pixel 3 charging speed and the Pixel Stand's charging wattage.

The Qi charging standard, adopted by just about every manufacturer for wireless charging, is 5W charging. With the Pixel 3, Google announced fast charging with 10W which would also be the output of the Pixel Stand. Clearly, those two could rapid charge together for rapid charging above industry standard.

However, it does not appear the Pixel 3 plays well with others.

While not explicitly stated, many Qi-standard wireless chargers support up to the 10W charging included in the Pixel 3, but it appears Google has blocked this. On a standard Qi charger, the Pixel 3 will only charge at 5W removing the "exclusive" rapid charging feature. In fact, it appears that the Pixel 3 will only charge at 10W on the Pixel Stand or future mats/stands that are part of the Made By Google program such as the recently announced charger by Belkin.

Additionally, while the Pixel Stand will charge other devices such as an iPhone or Galaxy, it will only charge at the industry standard 5W. Google has stated that the protocol included with the Pixel 3, as well as the chargers in the Made By Google program, has been designed specifically for the 10W fast charging. While it is Qi-compatible, it appears to work on a different protocol.

So, if you were thinking about getting a cheap Qi pad for your new Pixel 3, just be aware that you will not be getting touted rapid charging advertised by Google. Additionally, if you really wanted a Pixel Stand for your Galaxy (despite not being able to use it as a faux-Home Hub), again, remember that you will still be stuck on the slower industry standard. If you don't care about wireless charging, then just enjoy your fast charging with the included cable.
