The Huawei Mate 20 Pro looks like the Pixel 3 we really wanted

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has leaked in its entirety just days before the official launch, and it is a beauty.

It could be just my opinion, but Huawei has been making stunning devices for years now; they are certainly toward the top of my list of favorite designs. I happily say that with the original Huawei Watch on my wrist. The Mate 20 Pro is just another in that line of beautiful devices.

Spec wise, it checks all the flagship boxes. It has a 6.39" OLED display, 6/8 GB of RAM, 128/256/512 GB of storage, in-display fingerprint sensor, wireless charging, and the Octa-core Kirin processor which rivals (and possibly surpasses) the Snapdragon 845. Despite obvious political issues with Huawei and the United States, I still would love to have this device.

But that's not the point of this article.

The point is that it is just sad and frustrating to look at this device next to the Pixel 3 XL which is to represent the pinnacle of design for an Android device. When I look at a Surface, I see the ultimate beauty of what a Windows device can be from both a practical and physical viewpoint. When I look at the new Pixel, I think of all the advantages of owning a device made by Google being shoved in to one of the most aesthetically displeasing devices released for quite a long time.

Pixel 3 XL
When you see the notch, you cannot un-see it

To start, let's just look at the notch. I am not going to rant about how notches are an abomination and should not exist because I actually do understand the point. However, the depth of the Pixel notch compared to the Mate notch is drastic. Sure, it is not as wide leaving more room for notifications, but I simply don't believe it could not have been made more shallow. If you look at the Mate, it certainly appears as if there is enough space for the second camera if that was the reasoning. As for the front facing speakers, not only is it not a highly desired item, but they could have been shifted to the sides.

Additionally, let's examine the bottom bezel. I have a Pixel 2 XL so I am used to the bezel size, but when you see it next to this device, I just feel shame for Google. Again, move the speaker and thin that thing out.

Is the Pixel 3 XL a fantastic device? Of course it is. The screens are supposedly amazing, the camera is still mind-blowing, and I love the two-tone back. Is the Mate 20 Pro perfect? Of course not. I actually prefer rear fingerprint-sensor to in-display, the computational photography is certainly not Pixel quality, it has slightly unsymmetrical bezels, and it is not available in the United States.

But the vast difference in visual appeal is staggering.

Google has taken a tremendous beating from the android community for the Pixel 3 XL design, and frankly, they kind of deserve it. When you look at the beauty of a Samsung device or the gorgeous edge-to-edge appearance of an iPhone X(s), you realize just how far away Google is from an aesthetically stellar device, and Huawei has just made it that more obvious. Give me a phone with the front of the Mate 20 Pro (with the status bar blacked behind it, the back of a Pixel 3 XL (including fingerprint sensor and camera), the storage, RAM, and processor of an S9, and you will have created a true Android standard-bearer.
