Sony has decided to go full Deadpool with its new Venom blu-ray trailer, and it actually works.

Deadpool, the character and the movie, are as unique as it gets, and by 20th Century Fox allowing Ryan Reynolds to run the show, they were able to launch the most adventurous marketing campaign ever for a motion picture. Between taking over other DVD covers and re-packaging the sequel as a holiday movie, Deadpool dominated. However, the best aspect of the marketing campaign was the multi-themed trailers framing the movie as everything from an action-adventure to a romantic-comedy, and that is where Sony is looking to cash in.

The new Venom trailer, showcasing the blu-ray release, could not be any different from original marketing campaign. A movie described as a combination of a kick-ass hero flick mixed in with a parasitic horror film, Venom was positioned as the Logan of Spidey-based films. Because of that, as well as the sheer amount of comedy mixed with flat performances, the movie fell flat with critics and some fans alike. However, the chemistry between Tom Hardy and, well, Tom Hardy, was critically beloved making it one of the better buddy comedies of the year. The quirkiness of the premise as well as the full-on craziness of Hardy endeared it to viewers, and that is where Sony is looking for it to cash in.

The trailer features many common movie trailer aspects including a nice background music, bold title slides, and key movie moments. However, the material used in this trailer is fit for a romantic-comedy. A nice jaunty Christmas tune plays over the action while the title slides detail the combination of two hearts and two worlds becoming one; it evens uses the phrase "fall in love". Completing the absurdity, they use scenes of She-Venom kissing Eddie as well as Venom and Eddie talking while voicing-over Venom saying, "you are mine".

Is Venom really a romantic comedy, and we missed that initially? Of course not. But, Venom is a tale of complete absurdity mixed with ridiculousness that is perfectly encapsulated by Hardy's performance so what better way to sell it than with an absolutely ridiculous and absurd trailer? The trailer may not endear the movie any more to critics, but it certainly grasps what was so fun about it in the first place.
