Venom without Spider-Man...the horror!

Early reviews for Venom are in, and to call them mixed would be an understatement. Admittedly, I have no seen it yet, but I do plan on taking my brothers-in-law to see it soon. From a critical standpoint, Venom is an abomination. It has been called "mess", "disaster", and "trainwreck" by several critics with many questioning why it was ever made. The only redeeming quality for critics seems to be the performance of Tom Hardy (as if he could ever do anything wrong).

However, if you take a trip over to Rotten Tomatoes, you will see a shocking 89% positive rating from the audience. While some admit that the pacing is bad and the lack of Spider-Man is baffling, people are praising the action scenes and chemistry between Tom Hardy and, well, Tom Hardy.

What does this mean for viewers?

My advice: hold off judgement and give it a shot. As a cinema-lover, I believe in the spirit of critics and the job they are tasked with doing, but at the same time, we have seen that time and time again there is disconnect between critics and moviegoers.

Is Venom a perfect movie? I highly doubt it. All reviews point to the script under-using the talents of the actors, and it appears that the movie struggles with a tone. However, this movie, on its own, is a highly entertaining thrill ride with plenty of dark, buddy comedy between Eddie Brock and his head.

When I have had a chance to finally see Venom, I will certainly post my honest opinion about where it falls in terms of enjoyment, but for now, I recommend to avoid the critic reviews and enjoy the fun that only a character like Venom can provide.
